I’d learned, here on the KootNet, that cash was what was needed more than anything. Ms. Lou and I wanted to help out. So, being in Nelson about a week ago, I walked over to the Sally Ann and donated some money.

This morning I had CBC radio on in the background while I made breakfast and a Kerr spokesperson from Nelson was saying that ”things” are needed, too – specifically items kids can use & enjoy.

But we still feel good about the $$ donation. I guess they need both.

The good folks sorting all the donations still need help. I helped out with them over at the old video store on Vernon after work today (Monday). They’ll be at it all week. Volunteers are welcome – ask for Linda. They shut down after a full day today at 6pm but the rest of the week plan to stay at it until 9pm. If anyone has an hour or 2 or more free time during the day or evening – drop in and lend a hand.

I spoke with the folks at Our Daily Bread and they received several freezers yesterday. Now they have enough storage for all the food donations they have received.

    Well done, everyone.

I’m re-posting a great suggestion Terran Orletsky made in one of the stories about the Kerr building:

”Terran Orletsky 7 January 2011 at 11:22 pm
IDEA – How about: All those clothing and toy donations that are unused can now be sold (a low cost) by volunteers in a huge “flea market” at to other people in the community who can’t even afford the rising costs at the “thrift” stores in town. Then the money can be given to Kerr residents, other people in need are clothed, win win…”

It’s a great solution to the problems facing the charities flooded with donations and brings money to the Kerr residents.

I’ll start passing this idea along to whoever I can and I recommend you do to.

Rachel and I were discussing the high cost of thrift stores in Nelson last night and I think this is a great idea.

Yes definitely. Would love to help out with that!

I love this idea!! I would also like to assist, although it would be nice to have it as an open ”store” for a month or even a couple of weeks, rather than a one day event.

Our Daily Bread mentioned that they needed another freezer to use until the end of the month to hold donations.

Thanks for the heads up, Jim. Can anyone help?

Yes, I have a freezer (~16 cu ft) that they can have. RSVP. 250-512-9479. Jill

That is great. I have a truck but live in the Slocan Valley. Is there anyone else who could pick it up and deliver it? It would be worth stopping in at Our Daily Bread beforehand to make sure they are ready for it.

I just spoke with Jill and am going to Our Daily Bread to see if they need it

Talk to the gals at the front door. They were the ones who mentioned it to me yesterday.

I called Jill, confirmed the freezer and then went over to Our Daily Bread to see what their needs are.

They no longer need freezers, I was told. Several people dropped freezers off yesterday.

Way to go everyone. I called Jill to let her know.

Also, thanks to Jill, who’s from Rossland and offered to deliver the freezer if needed.

Here’s the story about how to best help the residents:

Chris Shepherd here, editor of the Nelson Post.

I just got a press release from Nelson Police Department advising that the amount of donations has been amazing, but almost too much. Dealing with all the items is becoming onerous and they suggest people consider financial donations to the Salvation Army (352-3488) or the Red Cross (354-4456).

I’ll write up a story soon, but wanted to get this out asap.

I took 30 pounds of meat from our freezers to Our Daily Bread and a bunch of clothes to WINS. They were excited to get some mens stuff as they are short on it so if you have anything for the men, they could use it.

Hi everyone, I’m Brittany, Shambhala’s Social Media Manager.

I posted on our Facebook page yesterday about what happened with the Kerr to promote the event at the Royal.

Our FB page has 30,000 fans, a third of which are from the US and other countries. A few non-locals have been inquiring about how they can help – I’m wondering if anyone has set up a paypal account to accept online donations? If such a thing exists, I can post the info. Thanks!

Hi Brittany. I don’t know about a PayPal account but people can try through the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

I’ve added the form directly to this page: http://inthekoots.com/kerr-donation-form/

You can add your stuff there and it will be stored in this google spreadsheet:

    https://spreadsheets4.google.com/ccc?key=tX5flHNl-BypnnIcad36cRQ&hl=en#gid=0

I think this will work fine as long as people remember to cross off or delete the stuff they have.

This is brilliant, but is there a way for people to post what they need so that we can donate it if we have it? I have kids clothes, but now I am not sure if they are still needed, and do these people have things like soap and toothpaste? If there are things that people need specifically, I wonder if there is a way that it can be listed for donors to check off… or if there are specifically people looking for a couch to crash on till they find housing… ?

Here are some google docs that we can use to create an inventory of everything available and cross them off as they are taken:

    https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AtI2tCB_5IwxdFg1ZmxITmwtQnlwbm5JY2FkMzZjUlE&hl=en

I haven’t added anything yet, but it’s a public doc so anyone can edit.
